Q&A
Q: What would you say is the most overlooked element of orienteering training and why?
A: I would say the "in-between" stuff. Those things that happen before and after the actual orienteering. Before your run, you need to set up specific goals and tactics to utilize on the course; you can't just take a quick glance at the map, blast off running, and hope that your control will pop up in a convenient spot. After your run comes analysis of your performance. It’s important to figure out exactly what went well and what didn’t. That way, you’ll know what to focus on next time you orienteer. Then there’s also the importance of nutrition, sleep, and mental health throughout the season. Keeping those things in check should lead to the best possible outcomes.
Q: What aspect of orienteering keep you interested and motivated to stay involved, train, and compete?
A: The most unique thing about orienteering is how different it is every time you do it. With every race comes an entirely new set of challenges, forcing you to stay fully engaged with what you’re doing. Plus, the sport still has lots of room to grow. There will always be new areas being mapped, new courses being set, and new people getting involved in orienteering. It’s the surprises and the possibilities that keep me coming back.
