Q&A

Q: If you had one tip for young orienteers what would it be?
A: Don't stress about multi sporting! Especially when you're younger, competing in more than one sport is super beneficial towards your overall athletic development and orienteering performance. Exclusively competing in one sport doesn't give many options for cross training if you ever get injured, and only provides one aspect of physical development. Variety is always best!
Q: Describe your overall approach to training for orienteering.

Because I also compete in biathlon, my general approach to training is to use my biathlon and dryland training as my primary physical training, and work on my navigation skills separately. Skiing is great base fitness for me, and dryland in the summers involve tons of running and mountain treks, which allow me to work on my technical orienteering skills at a slower pace when I need to, without needing to get a workout in. At the beginning of the orienteering season, I generally train at a slow pace to focus on the more technical aspects, and then combine physical and orienteering training several weeks later when my navigation is up to par with my running.
