Job Opportunity: Orienteering Canada - Communications Coordinator
Orienteering Canada is hiring a part-time Communications Coordinator employee to support our national communications, social media, and storytelling efforts. This is a remote role with flexible hours, averaging approximately 5 hours per week year-round. The position is paid hourly and is based on an ongoing, renewable annual basis. The hourly range will fall between $20-$25 based on experience.
Position Description
The Coordinator will assist with:
- Drafting and scheduling social media posts (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn), and monitoring social engagement
- Supporting newsletter creation (content gathering & layout)
- Assisting with website content updates
- Promoting Orienteering Canada programs (Team Canada Program, youth initiatives, major events, fundraising campaigns)
- Helping to coordinate communications with and among Orienteering Canada’s affiliated clubs and associations
- Gathering content for stories, athlete profiles, volunteer highlights, and other features targeting a range of orienteers (beginner to advanced, youth to older athletes)
- Contributing to Orienteering Canada’s communications planning
- Assisting with content for annual reporting
- Help develop, organize, and maintain Orienteering Canada’s photo bank
- Work closely with the Communications & Development Director to ensure that all communications content—including tone, messaging, and imagery—consistently reflects Orienteering Canada’s values and follows our communication standards for tone and visual identity.
- Developing content related to: Team Canada Program and athletes, Events, Orienteering Canada history, Sponsor and partner features, Participant and volunteer profiles, Fundraising initiatives, etc
Skills & Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a solid mix of the following skills and experiences:
- Ideally bilingual (English/French)
- Strong writing and editing skills
- Experience with social media communications
- Experience with updating websites
- Experience with Mailchimp
- Basic graphic design skills (familiarity with Canva)
- Basic video editing (reels, short interview clips)
- Comfort using shared drive/project management tools (Google Workspace, Basecamp, etc.)
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple small tasks
- Strong organizational skills
- Experience with national sport organizations or small nonprofits
- Interest in or experience with orienteering
- Familiarity with orienteering culture, clubs, and events
Requirements
The successful candidate must provide a current Criminal Record Check at their expense, which will be reimbursed upon employment. The successful candidate must also have completed the Coaching Association of Canada's Safe Sport Training within the last two years or be willing to complete prior to the position start date. The candidate will need to provide their own computer, high-speed internet connection, and home office.
Reporting Structure
For the content and priorities of the role, the Communications Coordinator will collaborate closely with and be guided by the Communications & Development Director, while reporting administratively to the Executive Director.
Employment Term
This position is offered as a one-year term, with the possibility of renewal based on successful performance. A three-month probationary period will apply.
