About the Foothills Wanderers Orienteering Club (FWOC):
FWOC is a not-for-profit, volunteer-run, sports club (founded in 1977) that provides orienteering training and competition opportunities for its members and promotes the development of orienteering in southern Alberta. FWOC organizes orienteering activities year-round (training events, beginner programs, and competitions). FWOC’s annual membership is approximately 800 (age range 2-91 yrs.)FWOC’s successful junior orienteering program, SOGO Adventure Running, delivers weekly programs, seasonally, for kids aged 2-17, school and group programming, summer camps and seasonal events. SOGO employs over 20 part-time staff seasonally.
FWOC is affiliated with the Alberta Orienteering Association, and by extension with Orienteering Canada and the International Orienteering Federation.
The Ideal Candidate:
We are looking for a motivated self-starter who excels at working with volunteers in a not-for-profit environment. We are looking for an individual who wants to help grow the club and the sport of orienteering. The employee will work primarily from home and will attend orienteering events in the Calgary area on occasion. The employee will work closely with the FWOC Board of Directors and its relevant committees. The employee will also interact with current and potential club members, parents of youth participants, schools, and current and potential partner organizations.
This is a full-time permanent position based in Calgary, with a salary range between $45,000 - $60,000 per year based on experience. The position will ideally begin in March 2025. The hours of work (40 hours per week) are flexible; some weekend and evening work will be required on occasion for events and meetings. The key responsibilities performed and listed below will vary by season, with an estimated overall percentage for the year shown.
Key Responsibilities:
Club Program Management - 60%
- Working with various committees, assist with the coordination of FWOC's orienteering programs, including SOGO Adventure Running
- Coordinate membership, program and event registration processes
- Develop and implement new programs and initiatives to grow club membership and participation
Club Administration duties - 20%
- Finances: Assist Club Treasurer with day-to-day bookkeeping and payroll processes
- HR: Coordinate recruiting, hiring, training and ongoing HR processes for SOGO staff (seasonal and permanent)
Governance, Strategic Planning & Monitoring - 10%
- Assist with FWOC Board budget planning and monitoring
- Oversee adherence to good governance standards by ensuring that all club governing documents (policies, terms of reference, by-laws, etc) are up-to-date and effective
- Work with the FWOC Board to implement the club’s strategic plan; prioritize project planning to ensure alignment with the strategic plan; monitor, and report progress towards the plan’s objectives
- Contribute to long-term planning for SOGO Adventure Running and the strategic growth of the program, in alignment with FWOC’s long-term goals
- Work with key individuals to ensure strategic alignment and optimal operational efficiencies between FWOC and SOGO Adventure Running
Communications and Marketing - 10%
- Develop and implement a long-term promotion and communications plan (including social media) for FWOC (including SOGO Adventure Running)
- Develop and implement key promotional opportunities and partnerships
- Communicate with club members and potential members to grow memberships, retain members and enhance commitment to the club
Qualifications:
- Experience in program management, preferably in a sports or recreation setting
- Understanding of good governance principles and their implementation
- Experience with event planning and execution
- Strong organizational and leadership skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
- Ability to independently prioritize tasks in order to meet the overall goals of the position - on budget and with minimal supervision
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
- Flexible and positive, with behavior that embodies the True Sport Principles
Additional Valuable Attributes:
- Knowledge of the sport of orienteering
- Experience working with volunteers in a not-for-profit environment
- Academic background in sport or recreation management
- Social media and communications management experience
- Promotions and marketing experience
- Substantive connections within the Calgary sport community
Reporting Structure:
The employee will report to the FWOC Board via the President or an appointed Board member.
