Since co-founding the Sage Orienteering Club in the early 1980s, Murray has been a driving force behind the growth of orienteering in Kamloops and across British Columbia. He has played a lead role in 32 of 38 Sage Stomp events, helping establish the annual competition as a key fixture in Western Canada and a frequent host of the BC Championships. Murray also brought his passion to rogaining, organizing or assisting with 14 major events, including the first North American Rogaining Championships in 1994 and the World Championships in 1998, earning international recognition for his expertise. He served on the International Rogaining Federation for 22 years, helping shape the sport globally. At the local level, Murray has organized at least one meet annually for over 30 years and acted as controller for provincial and regional championships. His commitment has helped Sage grow from a small club to a thriving organization with over 150 members across several BC communities. Murray’s leadership, vision, and countless volunteer hours have left a lasting legacy on the orienteering landscape in British Columbia.
